Business Engineering

Why do I call myself a "business engineer"?TomPhoto2

The Wikipedia definition of engineering is:

"Engineering is the discipline, art, skill and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, mathematical, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes that safely realize improvements to the lives of people.

Therefore, Business Engineering is the same thing, but applied structly to business enterprises.

My work emphasizes certain words and phrases in that definition:

  • discipline - no one can successfully operate a business without being disciplined in specific ways, and the Business Engineer must practice certain disciplines in order to teach that.
  • art - business is as much art as science, perhaps more, and the Business Engineer must take that into account in all his/her endeavors.
  • skill - certain skills are required both to operate a business, and to teach business people; among them, speaking skills, writing skills, and understanding of human psychology.
  • systems - a business without proper systems in place is a trainwreck waiting to happen; the Business Engineer must be skilled in creating and deploying systems of all kinds within a client's business.
  • processes - a process is the result of the functioning of a system; processes are the things a business owner must do on day-to-day basis to reach their business (and personal) goals.
  • improvements to the lives of people - Is there any other goal that matters?
